    ATDC5 is a murine chondrogenic cell line originally derived from the teratocarcinoma AT805. ATDC5 exhibits epithelial-like morphology and adherent culture properties. In vitro, ATDC5 cells undergo a continuous phenotypic transition that includes stages from mesenchymal condensation to calcification. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) can stimulate both early and late differentiation of ATDC5 cells, while activation of the parathyroid hormone (PTH)/PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) receptor can inhibit this differentiation potential.
