Cell Name: BALL-1

Acute lymphoblastoid leukemia (ALL).

  • Description
BALL-1 is a human  B-cell line that was originally isolated from the peripheral blood of a 14-year-old male patient with acute T-cell leukemia. BALL-1 exhibits lymphoblast-like morphology and suspension culture properties. It exhibits unique characteristics, including its ability to induce T cells to produce a distinctive eosinophil chemotactic factor. Transplantation into immunodeficient hamsters results in aggressive infiltration of skin and bone marrow, rapid tumor growth, and eventual leukemia development. BALL-1 cells are susceptible to the cytotoxic effects of the lectin abrin-a, while the protein GPSM1 promotes tumor growth within the cell line. Cultures can be sustained through fresh medium supplementation or by subcultivation through centrifugation and subsequent resuspension at a 1:2-1:4 ratio.
