Cell Name: BeWo Clone b30

Tissue: Placenta. This cell line was derived from a malignant gestational choriocarcinoma of the fetal placenta. This clone has proven useful in transport studies because the cells form polarized, confluent monolayers.

  • Description
BeWo Clone b30 is a placental choriocarcinoma cell line derived from a malignant gestational tumor of the fetal placenta in a male patient. This epithelial-like, adherent cell line has a doubling time of approximately 24–48 hours . Unlike the parental BeWo line, the b30 clone demonstrates enhanced monolayer formation, making it a preferred model for transplacental transport studies. The cells display abnormal gene expression profiles, including low baseline levels of steroidogenic enzymes such as CYP19A1 and HSD11B2, which can be modulated by forskolin-induced differentiation. As a tumor-derived line, BeWo b30 retains tumorigenic potential and expresses tight junction proteins, making it suitable for modeling placental barrier and hormone secretion dynamics.

  • Application
BeWo Clone b30 is extensively used as a crucial model for exploring trophoblast behavior, placental physiology, and maternal-fetal interactions. Its ability to form polarized, confluent monolayers makes it especially valuable for investigating transplacental transport mechanisms. Researchers utilize this choriocarcinoma cell line to explore nutrient, drug, and xenobiotic transfer across the placental barrier, as well as to study placental metabolism and hormone production. The model is instrumental in understanding factors that influence maternal-fetal exchange, shedding light on critical aspects of obstetrics, toxicology, and developmental biology.
