Cell Name: BJAB

Tissue: Peripheral blood. Established from the inguinal tumor of an EBV-negative 5-year-old African girl with Burkitt lymphoma at the preterminal stage.

  • Description
BJAB cells are a human B cell line established in 1973 from a Burkitt lymphoma tumor of a 5-year-old Caucasian girl. Despite exposure to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), these cells do not express EBV sequences or antigens. The cells exhibit a round to polymorphic morphology, growing either singly or in large, flat clumps in suspension. BJAB cells have important functions in immunology and cancer research, and are often used in the study of B cell receptor (BCR) signaling pathways, apoptosis mechanisms (such as Fas/CD95-mediated apoptosis), NF-κB activation, and virus (such as EBV/KSHV) and host interactions. Due to its EBV-negative characteristics, it is often used as a control cell line for the analysis of EBV-related carcinogenic mechanisms.

In tumor research, the BJAB cells are used to explore the pathogenesis of lymphoma, drug sensitivity and resistance, especially the development of targeted therapy for B-cell malignancies. In addition, BJAB cells are highly sensitive to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and are often used to study EBV latent infection, viral carcinogenic mechanisms, and antiviral drug screening.
