Cell Name: Bovine Rumen Intestinal Epithelial Cells

  • Description
Primary bovine ruminal epithelial cells (BRECs) are isolated from calf rumen tissue and cultured to retain squamous morphology, tight junctions, desmosomes, and key SCFA transporters (MCT1/MCT4). They actively absorb and metabolize volatile fatty acids, produce ketone bodies, and maintain barrier integrity essential for nutrient uptake and defense. BRECs respond physiologically to insulin, IGF‑1, butyrate, TGF‑β, and pH shifts by modulating proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and inflammatory cytokine signaling (e.g., IL‑1β, TNF‑α). These features render BRECs a robust in vitro model for rumen development, acidosis, epithelial transport, immune responses, and dietary or drug effects.

  • Application
Bovine Rumen Intestinal Epithelial Cells are utilized to study rumen epithelial functions including nutrient and SCFA uptake (e.g., MCT‑mediated absorption) and ketogenesis under butyrate and insulin/IGF‑1 stimulation. They model barrier integrity and pH stress responses, particularly in acidosis scenarios, by assessing tight junctions, apoptosis pathways, and transcriptomic changes. They also serve as a platform for inflammation research, as SCFA exposure triggers GPR41-mediated cytokine (IL‑1β, TNF‑α) and chemokine expression—offering insights into innate immunity regulation in the rumen epithelium.
