Cell Name: Calu-3

Lung adenocarcinoma; derived from metastatic site: pleural effusion

  • Description
Calu-3 is a human epithelial tumor cell line derived from the pleural effusion of a 25-year-old Caucasian male with lung adenocarcinoma. These adherent, cuboidal to polygonal cells grow as polarized monolayers with tight junctions and apical microvilli, expressing markers like ZO-1 and E-cadherin. The functional characteristics of Calu-3 cells are related to their tissue of origin. They retain certain differentiation characteristics of lung adenocarcinoma, including mucus secretion ability (expression of mucins such as MUC1 and MUC5AC) and ion transport function (such as CFTR channel activity). They are often used in the study of respiratory drug transport, mucus secretion mechanism and tumor biology. In addition, this cell line expresses epithelial markers (cytokeratin) but lacks the characteristic surfactant proteins of alveolar type II cells.

Calu-3 cells have broad utility in pulmonary studies. They can be used to model the airway epithelial barrier, offering crucial perspectives on respiratory biology. The utilization of this cell line holds value in the in vitro propagation of SARS-CoV-2, serving as an ideal target for gene delivery experiments, and offering significant s in the realms of cancer and toxicology research. Calu-3 cells also serve as a respiratory model for investigating the effects of gases, duration, physical strain, and biological stimuli on human airway epithelial cells.
