Cell Name: Chang Liver

Chang Liver Cell Line is from human; Tissue: HeLa-contaminant; Morphology: epithelial-like; Profile: Hela markers*.

  • Description
Chang liver is a human liver cell line that was originally derived from normal liver tissue. However, subsequent studies using isoenzyme analysis, HeLa marker chromosomes, and DNA fingerprinting revealed that the cell line was established through contamination with HeLa cells. Chang liver exhibits epithelial-like morphology and adherent culture properties. This cell line is aneuploid and displays chromosomal abnormalities similar to those observed in HeLa cells. Due to the ambiguity of its origin, Chang liver is commonly used in toxicology, virology, and cancer-related basic research, but caution should be exercised when interpreting experimental results because of its disputed origin and unique genetic background.

Historically misidentified as a liver cell model, the Chang Liver cell line was widely used before 1967 in studies of liver metabolism, cell biology, and toxicology. However, in 1974, cytogenetic analysis revealed that it shared chromosomal features with the HeLa cell line, confirming it as a HeLa derivative. Although it no longer serves as a valid liver cell model, its legacy underscores the importance of cell line authentication in biomedical research.
