Cell Name: COLO-800

Human melanoma. Derived from a subcutaneous nodule of a tumour from a 14-year-old male. Cells display remarkable blebbing. COLO 800 and COLO 794 were both derived from the same 14 year old male This has been confirmed by STR profiling.

  • Description
COLO-800 is a human cutaneous melanoma cell line that was originally isolated from a subcutaneous nodule of a 14-year-old male patient with melanoma. COLO-800 exhibits mainly epithelial-like morphology with few look like fibroblasts or neurons and adherent culture properties. A basic characteristic of these cells is the ability to produce melanin. The pro-oxidative effect of melanin leads to increased levels of oxygen free radicals within the cells, which in turn damages the DNA of melanocytes. These mutations result in the overactivation of various cell signaling pathways, such as the MAPK pathway, leading to uncontrolled proliferation, dedifferentiation, and immortalization of specific cell types.

  • Application
The COLO-800 cell line is used as a tumor model to simulate melanoma, making it critical for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying melanoma tumorigenicity and treatment resistance. Research on the genetic pathways of this cell line may help identify genes related to melanoma development and provide a theoretical basis for diagnosing and treating hereditary melanoma.
