This is an African green monkey kidney fibroblast-like cell line suitable for transfection by vectors requiring expression of SV40 T antigen. This line contains T antigen, retains complete permissiveness for lytic growth of SV40, supports the replication.

  • Description
    COS-7 is an immortalized fibroblast-like cell line derived from the kidney tissue of the African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). Established in 1981 by Professor Yakov Gluzman, COS-7 cells were created by transforming CV-1 cells with an origin-defective mutant of Simian Virus 40 (SV40) that encodes the wild-type large T-antigen. These cells exhibit adherent growth on glass and plastic surfaces and display a fibroblast-like morphology[].COS-7 cells are widely utilized in molecular biology and virology research due to their ability to support the replication of SV40 and recombinant plasmids containing the SV40 origin of replication . They are particularly valuable for transfection experiments, including the analysis of steroidogenic genes, steroid receptors, and the effects of steroids on gene expression. Regarding safety and quality control, COS-7 cells are confirmed to be negative for common contaminants, including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C viruses.
