Cell Name: EBTr

Bovine foetal trachea. Derived from the trachea of a male bovine foetus. The cell line can be used for isolation, replication and quantitation of BVDV, IBRV and parainfluenza type 3 virus. Growth and morphological characteristics decline beyond passage n.

  • Description
The EBTr cell line is an immortalized bovine fibroblast line derived from the tracheal mucosa of a male bovine fetus (Bos taurus). EBTr cells are adherent and show contact inhibition under conventional culture conditions (such as DMEM medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum, 37°C, 5% CO₂). This cell line retains many functional characteristics of respiratory ciliated epithelial cells: it expresses epithelial markers such as keratin, has the ability to secrete mucus, and can be induced to form ciliary differentiation in vitro. EBTr cells are susceptible to a variety of respiratory pathogens, especially bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (BPIV-3) and bovine coronavirus (BCoV), making them an important in vitro model for studying ruminant respiratory diseases.

  • Application
EBTr cell line can be used to study bovine respiratory diseases, such as bacterium and virus studies of cattle. As tracheal epithelial cells, EBTr can adhere to and be invaded by mycoplasma bovis, resulting in bovine mycoplasmosis and leading to significant economic losses for cattle producers worldwide. However, the molecular mechanism involved in the invasion is unclear. Moreover, the causes of bovine respiratory disease could include other gram-negative bacteria that express lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS has the ability to stimulate the innate immune system and induce an inflammatory response in the EBTr model. In sum, studies using the EBTr model may help better understand of bacterial immune evasion. EBTr can also be used for isolation, replication and quantitation of bovine parvovirus (BPV), bovine virus diarrhoea virus (BVDV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) and parainfluenza type 3 virus.
