The cells are positive for keratin by immunoperoxidase staining. HCT 116 cells are positive for transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1) and beta 2 (TGF beta 2) expression. This line has a mutation in codon 13 of the ras protooncogene.

    HCT-116 is a human colorectal carcinoma cell line that was originally isolated from the colorectal tissue of an adult male patient with colon cancer. HCT-116 exhibits epithelial-like morphology and adherent culture properties. This cell line is characterized by a specific mutation at codon 13 of the Ras proto-oncogene. The karyotype of HCT116 cells is nearly diploid. Cytokeratin expression was confirmed by immunoperoxidase staining. HCT-116 also expresses transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) and beta 2 (TGF-β2). HCT-116 is tumorigenic in athymic nude mice.
