Cell Name: Human Kidney Podocyte Cells

  • Description
Human Kidney Podocyte Cells are primary cells isolated from human kidney glomerular tissue, typically from healthy donors, and are used at low passage numbers (≤5) to preserve their functional phenotype. These epithelial-like cells are specialized components of the kidney filtration barrier, with interdigitating foot processes forming filtration slits that regulate plasma protein passage into the urinary space. Podocytes are adherent, polarized, and exhibit vesicular transport as part of their filtration function. They express key markers such as podocin, nephrin, WT1, and synaptopodin, confirmed via immunostaining and PCR. These cells are non-tumorigenic and non-metastatic. Podocytes play a crucial role in preventing proteinuria under normal conditions, but are sensitive to injury and are implicated in diseases like focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, minimal change disease, and diabetic nephropathy. Karyotype analysis shows a normal diploid set of chromosomes (46,XX or 46,XY), further supporting their genetic stability.
