Cell Name: Human Pulmonary Pericytes

  • Description
Human pulmonary pericytes are mesenchymal cells derived from the microvasculature of normal human lung tissue. These cells exhibit a spindle-shaped, fibroblast-like morphology and grow adherently under standard culture conditions. Typically isolated at early passage, they are non-immortalized and can only undergo limited in vitro expansion. Pulmonary pericytes play essential roles in angiogenesis, capillary integrity maintenance, vascular remodeling, and immune modulation in the lung. They respond to injury by releasing proinflammatory cytokines and regulate the PDGF-PDGFRβ signaling axis, crucial for vasculature repair. Dysregulation of these cells is associated with pulmonary fibrosis and chronic lung inflammation. The cells show a normal human karyotype, and markers such as PDGFRβ, NG2, and CD146 are expressed.

Growing evidence highlights the central role for pericytes as myofibroblast precursors, contributing to the development of lung disorders such as fibrosis and asthma. Human pulmonary pericytesserve as an accessible model for studying the biology and pathophysiology of primary pericytes. Exploring the interactions between pericytes and endothelial or other pulmonary cells may offer novel insights into pulmonary circulation and the underlying mechanisms of lung disease..
