Description

Human synovial macrophages derived from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) play a crucial role in the inflammatory environment of RA-affected joints. In RA, synovial macrophages are involved in the activation of other immune cells, such as T cells and neutrophils, and the remodeling of the extracellular matrix through the secretion of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). They also promote the formation of pannus, a tissue that invades and destroys cartilage and bone. These macrophages are highly active in both the initiation and progression of the disease and are key targets for therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating the immune response and inflammation. Cultured human synovial macrophages from RA patients provide a relevant in vitro model to study the disease mechanisms and test potential treatments for RA.
