Cell Name: Human Type 2 Diabetes PBMCs

  • Description
Human Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) PBMCs are peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from patients clinically diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. These cells exhibit heightened secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ and TNF-α, demonstrate an imbalanced Th1/Th17 immune response, contributing to persistent low-grade inflammation known as metaflammation. Transcriptomic analyses reveal increased expression of macrophage-associated markers like IL12 and CCR7, as well as cholesterol transport-related genes such as ABCA1. Additionally, T2D PBMCs show impaired mitochondrial function, including reduced oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and weakened antioxidant defenses. These immunometabolic features make them an important ex vivo model for studying T2D pathophysiology, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic screening targeting inflammation and metabolism.

Human Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) PBMCs are widely applied in studies of chronic low-grade inflammation by analyzing cytokine secretion profiles and Th1/Th17 skewing, as well as in mitochondrial dysfunction research through evaluation of oxidative phosphorylation capacity and antioxidant enzyme expression. They are also used in transcriptomic studies to identify differential gene expression in response to metabolic stressors, and to assess the effects of therapeutic compounds such as metformin or GLP‑1 receptor agonists on immune cell phenotypes and inflammatory pathways.
