Description

KM12SM is a human colorectal carcinoma cell line that was originally isolated from human colon tissue. It exhibits adherent culture properties. This cell line is tetraploid and produces elevated levels of type IV collagenolytic activity, and highly dependent on mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Studies on colorectal cancer KM12SM cells have shown that EFNA3, CD137L/TNFSF9, and SOSTDC1 play key roles in metastatic liver homing. KM12SM is highly metastatic.

Application

The KM12SM cell line is useful for comparing sensitivity to natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytotoxicity to determine resistance to NK cell-mediated lysis. This human colon cancer cell line can also be used to explore the mechanisms and pathways that promote cell proliferation and invasion, such as the regulation and mechanism of Phospholipase D (PLD) in tumor progression using cell scratch assays. Additionally, due to its liver metastatic ability, this cell line is useful for studying liver homing and the later stages of metastasis. Biological studies on colorectal cancer metastasis can help identify diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers or potential drug targets.
