Cell Name: KP-4

Human tumor cell line secreting parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) established from pancreatic tumor. Pancreatic ductal cell carcinoma, Tumor cell line secreting parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP). Transplantable to nude mice.

  • Description
KP-4 is a human pancreatic ductal cell carcinoma (PDAC) cell line derived from a 50-year-old Japanese male patient with metastatic PDAC in ascitic fluid. The cells exhibit epithelial-like morphology and show low expression of E-cadherin and high expression of vimentin mRNA. KP-4 cells secrete parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP), which makes them a valuable model for studying PTHrP regulation and its role in cancer. These cells are highly metastatic and can metastasize to the liver and lungs. KP-4 cells have a modal chromosome number of approximately 52–54 and carry a KRAS mutation (p.Gly12Asp). The cells have a doubling time of around 27 hours.

  • Application
KP-4 can be used to investigate how cancer cells evade apoptosis.. It was found that PI3K inhibitor can inactivate Akt, resulting in inhibition of cell proliferation in human pancreatic ductal carcinoma cell lines, PSN-1[a], PANC-1[b], and KP-4, and cell cycle arrested in the G1 phase with the PI3K inhibitor. Further studies using KP-4 may clarify whether the PI3K-AKT pathway supports proliferation in pancreatic ductal carcinoma. Otherwise, KP-4 can be applied in the field of identifying mutants and essential gene profiles of human pancreatic carcinoma for screening target genes and developing RNA drugs.
