Cell Name: LLC-WRC 256

Rat Walker carcinoma epithelial. Walker rat tumour cell line, which supports the growth of herpes simplex, pseudorabies and vaccinia viruses. The cells are highly tumourigenic in suckling rats.

  • Description
LLC-WRC 256 is a breast carcinosarcoma cell line derived from Walker rats, characterized by an epithelial-like morphology with polygonal shape and adherent growth in monolayer cultures. It exhibits a modal chromosome number of 41 (2n=42), though specific mutations and overexpressed genes remain unreported. This cell line is known for its ability to facilitate the growth of herpes simplex virus, pseudorabies virus, and vaccinia virus, highlighting its permissiveness to multiple viral infections. It displays high tumorigenicity in suckling rats but lacks documented metastatic potential. LLC-WRC 256 shares phenotypic and molecular similarities with the basal-B subtype of human breast cancer. Studies have shown that cholesterol inhibits both the proliferation and glutamine metabolism of these tumor cells, while the compound Krest also suppresses their growth.

The LLC-WRC 256 cell line offers diverse s in cancer research. Firstly, it enables the investigation of drug effects on cell proliferation of tumor cells, providing valuable insights into potential therapeutic strategies. This cell line plays a crucial role in studying the modulation of oxidative stress and the release of soluble biomarkers, which are key factors in tumor proliferation and angiogenesis. By examining these aspects in LLC-WRC 256, researchers can identify molecules with pivotal functions in cancer development. Moreover, LLC-WRC 256 facilitates screening for effective combinations of compounds with cytotoxic or cytostatic potential, aiding in the inhibition of tumor growth. The chosen combinations can then be utilized in subsequent assays, such as apoptosis evaluation and gene expression analysis, further contributing to our understanding of cancer biology and potential treatment strategies.
