Cell Name: MDA-MB-231

Species: human, Caucasian female 51 years old; Tissue: breast; Tumor: adenocarcinoma; Derived from: pleural effusion.

  • Description
MDA-MB-231 is a human epithelial-like breast cancer cell line derived from the pleural effusion of a 51-year-old Caucasian female diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This adenocarcinoma lacks estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2) expression, representing the claudin-low subtype. Morphologically, it exhibits spindle-shaped cells with some rounded ones, growing adherently in monolayers. MDA-MB-231 is aneuploid with a near-triploid karyotype and harbors mutations in KRAS, BRAF, NF1, and TP53. The cells express mesenchymal markers (CD44⁺/CD24⁻/low) and lack E-cadherin. Tumorigenic and metastatic in immunodeficient mice, MDA-MB-231 is a robust model for studying breast cancer progression, metastasis, drug resistance, and treatment. It is commercially sourced and routinely tested for contaminants like mycoplasma.

The MDA-MB-231 cell line has several valuable s in cancer research. It can be used to establish a tumor xenograft model. This cell line is particularly useful for studying cancer metastasis and evaluating how drugs inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells. Additionally, researchers can explore its efficacy in inducing apoptosis and evaluate its anti – tumor activity. The versatility of MDA-MB-231 makes it an important tool for advancing our understanding of breast cancer and developing therapeutic strategies.
