  • Description
MKN-28 is a human gastric tumor cell line originally derived from the metastatic lymph node of a 70-year-old Japanese male patient with well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the stomach. The cell line displays morphological features of intestinal differentiation, such as cell polarity and microvilli with core filaments both in vitro and in nude mice. MKN-28 is known to carry mutations in the p53 gene (I251L) and the APC tumor suppressor gene, and it exhibits silenced CD44 expression, as well as reduced or absent E-cadherin and β-catenin expression, contributing to its malignant phenotype. MKN-28 has a hypotriploid karyotype and has been reported as cross-contaminated with MKN74, and is thus referred to as MKN-28/74 in current research. The line is tumorigenic but not known to be metastatic.
