Cell Name: MT-2

Human T cell leukaemia. Derived from a 45 year old Japanese female with generalised lymphadenopathy and heptosplenomegaly (Adult T-cell Leukaemia) by co-culture of her peripheral leukocytes with male umbilical cord lymphocytes.

  • Description
MT-2 is a human cord T cell line that was originally established by co-cultivation of the peripheral leukocytes from a 45-year-old female T-cell leukemia patient with cord leukocytes from a male infant. MT-2 exhibits lymphoblast-like morphology and semi-adherent culture properties. The stemline karyotype of MT-2 is diploid with a male chromosomal pattern. This cell line displays typical T-cell characteristics, including expression of sheep red blood cells and complement receptors. MT-2 cells are persistently infected with type-C virus particles (ATLV) and are positive for ATL-associated antigens (ATLA), which are specifically recognized by sera from ATL patients.

  • Application
The MT-2 cell line exhibits phenotypic and functional characteristics similar to regulatory T cells (Tregs), making it a valuable model for studying Treg biology. These cells harbor HTLV-1 and support HIV replication, providing a platform for investigating virus-host interactions. MT-2 cells are also essential for exploring viral tropism, which is important in clinical decision-making and treatment development for infectious diseases.
