The PC-3 was initiated from a bone metastasis of a grade IV prostatic adenocarcinoma from a 62-year-old male Caucasian. The cells exhibit low acid phosphatase and testosterone-5-alpha reductase activities.

    PC-3 is a human prostate adenocarcinoma cell line originally derived from a bone metastasis in a 62-year-old Caucasian male with advanced prostate cancer. These cells exhibit epithelial-like morphology with irregular polygonal appearance and adherent culture properties. PC-3 has a highly aneuploid karyotype profile, with chromosomal counts ranging from 58 to 64, falling within the hypertriploid range. The cell line harbors common genetic alterations, including TP53 mutations and PTEN deletion. PC-3 is characterized by the absence of androgen receptor (AR) expression and low prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The cell line is tumorigenic when implanted in SCID mice.
