Cell Name: PLC-PRF-5

The cells produce HBsAg. At present, there is no evidence that this cell line produces infectious Hepatitis B virus.

  • Description
PLC-PRF-5 is a human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line derived from the liver of a 24-year-old male patient. This epithelial-like cell line exhibits adherent growth properties with a doubling time of approximately 30-40 hours. PLC-PRF-5 harbors integrated hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA, leading to secretion of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), though it does not produce infectious viral particles. The cell line demonstrates tumorigenic potential, forming substantial in-situ tumors in murine xenograft models. Key molecular features include overexpression of oncogenes such as c-myc and c-ha-ras, along with frequent TP53 mutations. Its unique combination of HBV antigen production and epithelial hepatoma characteristics makes it particularly valuable for studying virus-associated liver carcinogenesis.

The PLC-PRF-5 cell line offers a versatile platform for multiple research s. In oncology, it serves as a valuable tool for investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying hepatocellular carcinoma, including pathways driving tumor growth and malignant progression. Furthermore, its ability to produce HBsAg makes it a key model for hepatitis B virus-related liver disease, enabling studies of HBV-associated carcinogenesis and viral-host interactions. Additionally, PLC-PRF-5 contributes to research on sexually transmitted disease with hepatic manifestations and supports efforts to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets for liver cancer. Its dual relevance to both cancer biology and virology makes PLC-PRF-5 an indispensable tool for advancing translational liver disease research.
