RAJI cell line was established from the left maxilla of a 12-year-old African boy with Burkitt lymphoma in 1963.

  • Description
    Raji is a human B lymphocyte cell line derived in 1963 from the peripheral blood of an 11-year-old Nigerian male diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma. These undifferentiated lymphoblasts are characterized by large floating clusters in suspension, with irregularly indented nuclei, abundant cytoplasm, and clumping ribosomes. Raji cells grow as multicellular aggregates and exhibit typical signs of Burkitt lymphoma, including the hallmark t(8;14)(q24;q32) chromosomal translocation, leading to MYC gene overexpression. They are Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive, maintaining a latent viral genome, and serve as a classical model for EBV-associated lymphoid malignancies. The karyotype is complex and highly abnormal. Raji cells are tumorigenic when xenografted into immunodeficient mice. This line provides a valuable system for studying viral oncogenesis, B-cell immunology, and lymphoma pathogenesis.
