This line was established in 1997 from a vertebral bone metastasis from a patient with hormone refractory prostate cancer. It was passaged as xenografts in mice then cultured in vitro. It is androgen sensitive in vitro and in vivo.

  • Description
    VCaP is a prostate adenocarcinoma cell line that was originally isolated from the metastatic tumor to the vertebrae of a 59-year-old caucasian male patient with hormone-refractory prostate cancer. VCaP exhibits epithelial-like morphology and adherent culture properties. This cell highly express prostate specific antigen (PSA)prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), cytokeratin-18 and the wild type androgen receptor. It is sensitive to androgen treatment. VCaP is tumorigenic, it capable to form a tumor in nude and SCID mice. Its concurring a lager proportion of genomic rearrangements along the q arm of chromosome 5 which indicate to chromothripsis.
